WHAT WILL WHITE AMUR FISH COST?...

Each fish is approximately 12' in length and costs between $6 and $7. We know that 30 fish/infected acre works ($210 per acre maximum). This compares favorably with estimated herbicide cost of $1,500/acre. Should herbicides work, the $1,500/acre is not a one-time expense; a yearly "maintenance" cost will result. The White Amur has an estimated life of 15-20 years.

A survey conducted in late 2005 indicated almost 900 acres contaminated with Hydrilla. Since Hydrilla, in its peak growing season can double every week, periodic assessments of the current(May 2006) level of infestation is paramount to enable a rapid decision to purchase and introduce more fish than the current 5/acre, should the Hydrilla be increasing. It is equally important that Giant Salvinia is controlled by herbicides until the weevil study is comploeted. Giant Salvinia grows equally as fast as Hydrilla.

The LCA is of the opinion that introduction of the White Amur, in conjuction with herbicide treatments, offers the best chance of establishing an equilibrium of plant and fish in Lake Conroe.

The SJRA has been a tremendous help with funds and manpower to date and has spent approximately $75,000/year for herbicides. For the past 4 years the LCA has been helping by funding the monitoring of Hydrilla, Giant Salvinia, and Water Hyacinth. This has allowed the SJRA to use the funds for buying and applying herbicides. Over the past 4 years, the LCA has funded surveys to monitor the spread of the above, help in the purchase of herbicides and funded the initial purchase of the 4,300 White Amur in March 2006. Total cost - $200,000.
